Bicycle Corporation welcomes guest DJ Bert Bevans for the upcoming 'Roots' show. Scientific Sound Asia operates as an online electronic music station, DJ agency, and promoter in Asia, with a global reach.
Bicycle Corporation, the Italian duo comprising DJ and Producer Marco Mei and the talented Stefano Ugliano, also known as 6884, has released an impressive catalogue of over 50 tracks across various sub-genres of House music and Techno.
In the early nineties, Marco embarked on his musical journey as a DJ and producer, establishing House Music and Techno events under the collective 'Urban People' across Italy. His growing fame earned him a residency at Pacha, leading to international DJ bookings and propelling him into a global musical career.
Growing up in Torino, Italy, Stefano showed remarkable musical talent from a young age. He pursued classical piano, percussion, and drums with intense dedication, admiring Chopin and the rhythms of West African Djembes. Yet, it was the captivating image of a DJ performing on stage that increasingly enchanted the young Stefano.
He pondered whether those electronic beats, once scarce on Italian radio stations of the '90s, would herald a new chapter in his life. That's when Bicycle Corporation came into existence. Bicycle Corporation has unveiled a Hard Techno remix of Virus D.D.D's track "Origination," which is now highlighted in Beatport's staff picks, and it's indeed a captivating track.
Guest DJ Bert Bevans.
This week's guest is Bert Bevans, a DJ born in British Honduras who began his career playing at "Block Parties" in Hollis, New York, and then at other iconic NYC clubs like Studio 54, Paradise Garage, Xenon, Electric Circus, Bonds, and the Playboy Club. His family moved to New York on July 27, 1969, initially settling in Jamaica, Queens, before relocating to Hollis, Queens, where he spent his teenage years.
After school, he pursued aviation studies but did not complete them. He explained, "Had I graduated, I would've been sent to Vietnam, so I left. I still love flying." For him, transitioning into a DJ seemed like a natural evolution. He began with block parties in Hollis, and from there, his career simply unfolded.
He had never intended to become a DJ, yet while working at Melody's Record Shop, he encountered many of New York's DJs who frequented the store for the newest hits. They took a liking to him and often invited him to their clubs, which paved the way for his unexpected career.
In April 1977, the most renowned club of all time, Studio 54, opened its doors in New York. Bert quickly played his first private party there, and it certainly wasn't his last at '54'.
Richie Kaczor, the DJ from Studio 54, was dispatched to St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands to establish a '54' venue. Subsequently, he was recruited to inaugurate another '54' in Barcelona, Spain. Upon his departure from St. Thomas, Richie handed over the Studio 54 residency in the Virgin Islands to his successor.
After spending two years in the Virgin Islands, he returned to New York. Shortly thereafter, Steven Hatter offered him a residency at 'The Embassy' club in London, UK.
This opportunity was followed by another residency at London's new hot spot, Xenon. He seamlessly integrated into the London club scene, performing at Camden Palace, a club owned by Rusty Egan and Steve Strange from Visage, where he DJ'ed alongside Colin Favor and "Evil" Eddie Richards.
For several years, Bevans travelled extensively between London, New York, and other global cities. In 1991, he reconnected with his old friend Justin Berkmann, who was constructing a "Paradise Garage type sound system" for a new venue in London. This venue, set to open in September, was the now-famous Ministry of Sound. He continues to travel widely, performing at diverse venues and nightspots worldwide. Over the past few years, he has assisted Santeri in establishing "Seduction" in Phuket, which hosted the MOS/Hed Kandi tours and has recently finalized a partnership with Café del Mar in Ibiza.
Additionally, he contributed to the launch of the Ice and Spice Bar in Ho Chi Minh City and continues to be at the forefront of the clubbing scene. His show was originally broadcast on Sunday, November 14th, and you can listen to it using the Mixcloud player below.
