Bicycle Corporation presents guest DJ Bert Bevans for the upcoming Roots 121 show. Scientific Sound Asia, the online electronic music station for Asia, reaches audiences both locally and internationally, showcasing talent from across the electronic music spectrum.
Bicycle Corporation is a dynamic Italian duo consisting of DJ and producer Marco Mei alongside the accomplished Stefano Ugliano, known as 6884. As a duo, they have amassed a portfolio of over 60 original tracks and remixes across the House Music and Techno sub-genres.
Marco began his musical journey in the early nineties, founding the collective Urban People, a series of DJ nights held across Italy that quickly gained traction. His innovative style earned him a residency at the legendary Pacha, a pivotal moment that opened doors to global bookings and propelled him on a musical journey around the world.
Stefano, raised in Torino, Italy, exhibited remarkable musical talents from an early age. With a deep love for classical music, he trained in piano, percussion, and drums, exploring everything from the compositions of Chopin to the lively beats of West African Djembes.
As a teenager, however, Stefano was captivated by the allure of electronic music, envisioning himself as the DJ commanding the crowd. This vision led to the formation of Bicycle Corporation, marking the beginning of his career in the electronic music scene.
Since its inception, Bicycle Corporation has produced an array of techno and house music, including a hard techno remix of Virus D.D.D's Origination, which was highlighted in Beatport’s staff picks.
Despite being globally acknowledged, Marco and Stefan always keep in mind their modest origins as teenagers delving into electronic music for the first time. Recently, they have been going back to some of their early tracks and have even created a Bandcamp page to make them available. Their Roots show features renowned DJs and producers from different regions of Asia who are active in the electronic music scene.
Guest DJ Bert Bevans.
This week's guest DJ is Bert Bevans. Originally from British Honduras, Bert’s career started with “block parties” in Hollis, New York, which then led him to play at iconic NYC clubs such as Studio 54, Paradise Garage, Xenon, Electric Circus, Bonds, and the Playboy Club.
His family immigrated to New York on 27th July 1969, first settling in Jamaica, Queens, before moving to Hollis, where Bert spent his teenage years. After high school, Bert pursued aviation studies, though he didn’t complete the program.
As he recalls, “If I had graduated, I would have had to go to Vietnam, so I left. I still love flying.” Becoming a DJ was an unplanned progression for him, initially through block parties in Hollis, after which he was increasingly drawn into the music scene.
Working at Melody’s Record Shop in New York was a turning point. DJs from across the city frequented the shop for the latest records and invited him to their clubs. His growing connections with these DJs marked the start of his journey, leading him to the doors of Studio 54.
In April 1977, the legendary Studio 54 opened in New York, and Bert soon found himself DJing private parties there, an opportunity that became recurring. In time, Studio 54 DJ Richie Kaczor relocated to St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands to open a branch of Studio 54, and soon afterwards moved to Barcelona to set up another.
With Kaczor’s departure, Bert inherited the Virgin Islands residency, establishing himself as the primary DJ at the St. Thomas Studio 54. After two years in the Virgin Islands, he returned to New York, where Steven Hatter offered him a residency at *The Embassy* in London.
Bert’s London career rapidly evolved, leading to another residency at the popular Xenon and performances at Camden Palace, owned by Rusty Egan and Steve Strange of Visage fame, where he played alongside talents like Colin Favor and “Evil” Eddie Richards. During this period, he became a sought-after DJ, travelling between London, New York, and cities worldwide.
In 1991, he reconnected with longtime friend Justin Berkmann, who was developing a “Paradise Garage-style sound system” for a new club in London. This venue, which opened later that year, was none other than the renowned Ministry of Sound, where Bert became a notable figure in its early days.
Today, Bert continues his global DJ travels, performing at various venues. Over recent years, he helped establish the club Seduction in Phuket with his friend Santeri, secured a deal with Café del Mar Ibiza, and, before the pandemic, was instrumental in launching Ice and Spice Bar in Ho Chi Minh City.
