Bert Bevans, guest DJ from Bicycle Corporation, will be hosting his second Roots show. Scientific Sound Asia serves as the premier Asian electronic music station and DJ agency, catering to both regional and international audiences.
Bicycle Corporation comprises the Italian duo of DJ and producer Marco Mei, along with the talented Stefano Ugliano, also known as 6884. Together, they have collectively produced and remixed more than 50 original tracks spanning the realms of House and Techno genres.
In the early 1990s, Marco began his musical career as a disc jockey, drawing significant inspiration from the rise of Electronic music and Afrocentric rhythms. Captivated by this musical transformation, he started organizing his own House music events and Techno parties under the name Urban People, across different parts of Italy.
His remarkable talent as a DJ gained him significant acclaim, resulting in a prestigious residency at Pacha, Egypt. This position propelled him into global fame, securing DJ engagements worldwide and launching his musical career internationally.
Hailing from Torino, Italy, Stefano showed extraordinary musical abilities from a young age. He passionately dedicated himself to studying classical piano, percussion, and drums, demonstrating a profound admiration for Chopin's compositions and the beats of the West African Djembe.
As Stefano grew older, his interest in music transformed, and he became captivated by the image of an electronic DJ energizing the audience. Unbeknownst to him, these electronic rhythms, rare on '90s Italian radio, would introduce an entirely new phase in his life.
Despite their current success, Marco and Stefano remain grounded in their humble origins. Recently, they revisited some of their earlier tracks and established a Bandcamp page to distribute them. Through their House Music and Afrocentric music radio show, Roots, they shine a spotlight on key artists from the Asian region, showcasing their commitment to promoting diverse talents.
Guest DJ Bert Bevans.
This week's special guest on the show is Bert Bevans, a DJ hailing from British Honduras. He started his DJ career at "Block Parties" in Hollis, New York, and later played at legendary New York City venues like Studio 54, Paradise Garage, Xenon, Electric Circus, Bonds, and the Playboy Club.
Bert's family moved to New York on July 27th, 1969, initially residing in Jamaica, Queens, and later relocating to Hollis, Queens, where he grew up. After finishing school, Bert began studying aviation but did not finish his education. He states, "If I had graduated, I would have been sent to Vietnam, so I left. I still love flying."
Pursuing a career as a DJ felt like a logical step for him. He started out by playing at block parties in Hollis, and his career developed naturally from that point.
Despite never planning to become a DJ, Bert's journey changed direction when he started working at Melody's Record Shop. Numerous DJs from New York visited the shop to find the latest releases, and they developed a liking for Bert. Impressed by his musical taste, they invited him to accompany them to their clubs.
His path as a DJ began from that point, eventually becoming a significant piece of musical history. In April 1977, New York saw the grand opening of Studio 54, considered by many to be the most famous club ever.
Soon enough, Bert was performing at his first private party at the club, marking the start of his connection with Studio 54. This initial event was merely the beginning of numerous unforgettable performances for Bert within the legendary confines of '54'.
DJ Richie Kaczor from Studio 54 was assigned to open a branch of the famous club in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands. After his successful work there, he was recruited to start another Studio 54 location in Barcelona, Spain.
When Richie left St. Thomas, he handed over the residency at Studio 54 in the Virgin Islands to Bert, marking an important milestone in Bert's career. After spending two years in the Virgin Islands, Bert went back to New York. Soon after, he got an appealing offer from Steven Hatter for a residency at his prestigious club, 'The Embassy', in London, UK.
This opportunity led to another residency at the emerging London venue, Xenon. Bert smoothly integrated into the London club circuit, performing at places like Camden Palace, owned by Rusty Egan and Steve Strange of Visage. At Camden Palace, Bert joined the DJ booth with Colin Favor and "Evil" Eddie Richards, strengthening his role in the lively London nightlife.
For several years, Bevans travelled extensively between London, New York, and numerous other cities around the world. In 1991, he reunited with his old friend Justin Berkmann, who was leading the creation of an innovative "Paradise Garage type sound system" for a new London nightclub. This venue, set to open in September, was the legendary Ministry of Sound, representing a pivotal moment in Bevans' career.
As he progresses on his journey, Bevans adheres to a rigorous schedule of global travel, engaging audiences at various venues and nightspots. In recent years, he has been instrumental alongside Santeri in the creation of "Seduction" in Phuket. Furthermore, Bevans has recently completed a partnership agreement with Café del Mar Ibiza, representing another major achievement in his distinguished career.
Prior to the pandemic, Bevans played a key role in the opening of an Ice and Spice Bar in Ho Chi Minh City. We welcome him onboard our radio station and enjoy the show.
