Bert Bevan's third Roots show was originally aired on the 13th of September 2020, listen on the Mixcloud player under the playlist. Scientific Sound Asia is the English language electronic music radio station for Sri Lanka, Japan, Singapore, Thailand, India, South Korea, the rest of Asia, and Internationally.
Bicycle Corporation is an Italian duo of the DJ and Producer Marco Mei plus the skilled Stefano Ugliano a.k.a 6884. They have over 50 releases including genres from Deep House, Tech House, French House, Melodic and Techno.
At the beginning of the nineties, Marco was starting on his musical journey as a DJ and producer. He started a DJ and promotion collective entitled Urban People and they began hosting events all over Italy.
After making a name for himself on his own shores he earned a residency at the world-renowned Pacha Club in Egypt. The demonstration of his art on the turntables gained him a reputation as a party starter and he gained further international bookings.
His partner in crime Stefano started life in Torino, Italy and was a gifted child who showed great talent in the musical arts. His prowess on percussion, drums and classical piano was matched by his passion for West African Djembes and Chopins.
As he reached maturity in his early teens he became obsessed with another form of music and the imagination of performing as an electronic music DJ on the stage overwhelmed him. He became obsessed with electronic music, even though it was hard to find on the Italian airwaves in the nineties.
Then by chance, he met Marco Mei and the pair had a common understanding of their perception of the electronic arts and Bicycle Corporation was conceived. The companions have transformed their vision of electronic music into releases on many international labels and it is no longer a dream.
As the duo produced together with their renowned skills they had a steady flow of releases and are still working together on more for the coming year. Just recently, their earlier tracks have gone out of contract with the original labels so they have set up a Bandcamp page to distribute them.
Guest DJ Bert Bevans.
This week Bicycle Corporation have a guest DJ Bert Bevans, he is a British Honduras-born DJ. He started out playing Block Parties in Hollis, New York.
He followed this up by performing at other legendary NYC clubs such as Studio 54, Paradise Garage, Xenon, Electric Circus, Bonds and the Playboy Club. His family immigrated to New York on July 27, 1969, and settled down in Jamaica, Queens and later moved to Hollis, Queens, where he lived during his teens.
After school, he studied aviation, but he never finished his education, as he tells us himself: "If I had graduated, I would have had to go to Vietnam, so I left. I still love flying though!". Bert explains that becoming a DJ was a very "Natural Progression".
He began by doing "Block Parties" in Hollis, and after a short while, things just happened. He never planned to be a DJ, but when he worked in Melody's Record Shop, most of the New York DJs came there to get the latest releases.
They liked him and would invite him to their clubs, ultimately the rest is history! In April of 1977, the most famous club of all time opened up its doors in New York, this club was Studio 54.
It didn't take long before Bert played his first private party in the club and he followed up with others. The Studio 54 DJ Richie Kaczor was sent down to St.Thomas in the Virgin Islands to open up a Studio 54 there.
After a few months, he was sent to open up another 54 in Barcelona, Spain and when leaving St.Thomas Richie turned the residency of Studio 54 in the Virgin Islands over to Bert. After nearly two years in the Virgin, Islands, Bert was back in New York.
Very soon after, he was given an offer by Steven Hatter of a residency at his club The Embassy in London, UK. This led to another residency at the other new London hot spot Xenon.
He moved along well in the London club scene, playing in Camden Palace, where he DJ'ed along with Colin Favor and "Evil" Eddie Richards. He travelled back and forth between London, New York and other cities for many years.
But in 1991 he met his old friend Justin Berkmann who was building a new Paradise Garage-type sound system in a new club in London, which was to open up in September, this club was no other than the Ministry of Sound. Bert still travels extensively around the globe performing at various venues and nightspots.
Over the past few years, he has helped Santeri build Seduction in Phuket. He has just completed a deal with Café del Mar Ibiza. Recently, he has also helped open Ice and Spice Bar Ho Chi Minh City.
