Scientific Sound Asia has recently unveiled the latest playlists for DJ Joshua's radio show, Velvety Elements, episode 260. As a prominent entity within the Asian electronic music scene, Scientific Sound Asia operates as a radio station, promoter, and DJ agency, playing a vital role in the advancement of the electronic music community across the continent.
Originating from Évora, Portugal, DJ Joshua has made a considerable impact on the electronic music scene, with a career characterised by dedication, resilience, and an ever-expanding repertoire of genres. His extensive collection of digital files, vinyl records, CDs, and cassettes stands as a testament to his unwavering commitment to electronic music, enabling him to explore a diverse range of sounds.
Throughout his career, DJ Joshua has gained recognition across various genres, including Techno, Drum and Bass, and Chillout; however, House music has consistently remained at the core of his artistic identity. During the 1990s, amidst the challenges faced by the rave scene in Portugal, Joshua remained resolute, discovering innovative methods to share and distribute his music.
By collaborating with fellow artists and organising events in clubs and bars, he cultivated environments for House and Techno enthusiasts to connect, significantly extending his influence beyond his local community. After taking a hiatus to focus on family following the birth of his child, Joshua reignited his passion for DJing as his daughter grew, culminating in the creation of the Floating Beats radio show.
Floating Beats provided him with a platform to explore a vast spectrum of electronic music, seamlessly blending progressive, melodic, and deeper techno-infused sounds. Nevertheless, his enduring passion for House music inspired him to launch a second show: Velvety Elements.
Velvety Elements enables DJ Joshua to delve into the more subtle and refined aspects of House music, merging warm rhythms, soulful melodies, and intricate layering to create an elegant listening experience. The show features deep, smooth, and emotionally resonant tracks, designed to immerse listeners in a luxurious and sophisticated atmosphere, showcasing his precision as a selector and his intuitive ability to harmonise melodies.
By adopting various aliases, including K-Joshua, Joshua Marian, Joshua Fernand, and Joshua Onairam, he has broadened his creative horizons by exploring different styles of House music. In January 2024, he established JFLM Recordings, a label aimed at showcasing his production work and providing a platform for his artistic vision.
Velvety Elements signifies another chapter in his ongoing musical journey, as he aspires to guide listeners through a refined exploration of House music’s most sophisticated and enchanting sounds across various sub-genres.
The set begins with a smooth House vibe, opening with Valerio Vaudano’s "Smooth as Butter" and Mona Lee’s soulful "The Reason" (Red D Dub). These rich and bouncy rhythms create an inviting start, setting the tone for the journey ahead.
Moving deeper, Alex V’s "I Feel It," Manuel Kane’s "Ready to Thrive," and Intr0beatz’s "Too Much Info" seamlessly flow into the set, bringing lush Deep House textures. Damian Rausch’s "About Love" adds a dreamy, hypnotic groove before Davi’s "Forbidden City" (Khen Remix) brings a stunning Progressive House lift to the mix.
Returning to Deep House, Danny Howells’ "Powershow" (Payoff Mix) and Don Swing’s "Living House Music" keep the energy grounded yet lively, while DJ Sneak’s "I Can Tell You What You Want" injects classic House flair. Jholeyson’s "Mi Pacifico" then introduces a light Tech House twist, building toward the final stretch.
Joshua wraps up the episode with his own production, "Shouts of Solidarity," a heartfelt Deep House closer that perfectly embodies the spirit of the set, soulful, uplifting, and timeless. Velvety Elements 260 is a beautiful showcase of Joshua’s ear for melodic storytelling.
Don't forget to listen to his live radio show on Tuesday, April 29th, 2025, from 6 to 8 p.m. Indochina Time (ICT). If you miss it, the replay will be available on Friday from 6 to 8 a.m. (ICT).
