Many Hands is the creative project of DJs Jona J and Kava, both known for their diverse musical influences. Jona, born Jona Jefferies in Barcelona and raised between Spain and the UK, started DJing during the lively free party and rave scene in southwest England in the early nineties.
After relocating to Ibiza, he was deeply influenced by the island’s Balearic sound and hedonistic energy, which has kept him returning over the years. Following Ibiza, Jona moved to Bristol, where he embraced the city’s unique sound system culture.
Jona gained recognition across Berlin’s music scene, performing in many of the city’s top venues before returning to the UK in early 2020. His track Nocturnal, created with longtime friend Lewis Hopkin of Stardelta Mastering under the name Sapience, was released on Tom Middleton’s Sound Of The Cosmos label. This track gained attention from respected DJs like Gilles Peterson, Mala, and Laurent Garnier, who featured it on their radio shows.
Originally from New Zealand, Kava has lived in Berlin for over ten years. His DJ journey began in Wellington, where he experienced a rich variety of genres including Soul, Bashment, Hip Hop, Disco, House, Techno, and Drum and Bass. Kava played a vital role in New Zealand’s vinyl culture and hosted numerous radio shows, sharing his deep knowledge and love for music with listeners nationwide.
After moving to Berlin, Kava quickly joined the local scene, initially becoming a resident on Float Some and Jet Some, a monthly radio show co-hosted with Rodi Kirk of Scratch 22. This show aired on the now-defunct Berlin Community Radio and allowed Kava to build a loyal following. His work and regular performances across Berlin’s venues solidified his presence in the city’s electronic music scene.
The two DJs met through a mutual friend at Berlin’s OYE Records and instantly recognized a shared creative synergy. This connection led to the formation of Many Hands, an eclectic session known as Basement Soul, held in the heart of Berlin’s underground scene.
Jona J and Kava’s sets traverse a broad musical landscape, seamlessly blending Disco, Soul, Latin, and Afrobeat with MPCs, drum machines, New York Jamaican influences, and West African rhythms on synthesizers. Their sound varies from glitchy to intense, but their sets are always crafted for dancers, showcasing an unpredictable yet cohesive musical journey.
Many Hands 'Basement Soul' Show 19 brings a rich mix of Dub, Funk, Hip-Hop, and Deep House with a unique global feel. From The Kiwi Animal's Post-Punk vibes on "Man And Woman Have Balance" to Dam Funk's retro groove "Forever," each track offers a journey through distinct musical landscapes.
