Many Hands, a disc jockey duo from New Zealand and the UK and based in Berlin has recently unveiled their playlist for 'Basement Soul' episode 54. Hosted on Scientific Sound Asia, an electronic music station and DJ agency based in Asia, the platform serves expatriates and locals within the region and internationally.
Many Hands represents the intellectual property of deeply immersed DJs, Jona J and Kava. Jona, born Jona Jefferies in Barcelona, grew up between Spain and the UK. He embarked on his journey as a disc jockey amidst the burgeoning free party and rave culture in the Southwest of England during the early nineties. Following a move to Ibiza, he became captivated by its Balearic sound and hedonistic atmosphere, leading him to frequent the island as both a raver and a disc jockey ever since.
Following his time in Ibiza, Jona ventured to Bass City, Bristol, renowned for its inner-city atmosphere and Sound System Culture, where he dedicated several years to refining his craft. Jona, known for his free-spirited nature, garnered acclaim within Berlin's expanding international music scene, performing at various venues across the city's urban landscape. Then in 2020, he returned to the United Kingdom to continue his musical journey.
Jona's release 'Nocturnal', a collaborative project with his longtime friend Lewis Hopkin of Stardelta Mastering, under the alias 'Sapience', for Tom Middleton's 'Sound Of The Cosmos' record label, gained significant recognition. The track received airtime from prominent DJs including Gilles Peterson, Mala, and Laurent Garnier.
Originally hailing from New Zealand, Kava has called Berlin home for over a decade. His musical journey began amidst the vibrant Wellington music scene, where he was immersed in a rich tapestry of Soul, Bashment, Hip Hop, Disco, House, Techno, and Drum and Bass. In New Zealand, Kava flourished by distributing vinyl records to the masses and hosting numerous radio shows on various radio stations.
Upon migrating to Berlin, Kava became a longstanding resident of the now-defunct monthly radio show, "Float Some and Jet Some," alongside Rodi Kirk of Scratch 22 fame, which aired on the now-extinct Berlin Community Radio. Additionally, he showcased his artistic talent at numerous venues throughout the German capital.
Jona and Kava crossed paths through a mutual acquaintance near OYE Records in Berlin, and the two quickly discovered a musical synergy, recognizing a unique fusion between them. This serendipitous encounter gave birth to Many Hands, an eclectic dance, defrag, and soothing music session, known as Basement Soul, held in the heart of Berlin in an underground setting.
Jona J & Kava's performances traverse a diverse rhythmic and harmonic cultural spectrum. Disco, Soul, Latin, and Afrobeat converge seamlessly with MPCs and Drum Machines, blending influences from Jamaicans in New York, West Africans with Synthesizers, and funky Euro-freaks. Their music is characterized by its occasional quirkiness, and occasional bashiness, but always crafted with dancers in mind.
Many Hands epitomize vinyl record enthusiasts and music aficionados. As 80s kids, they possess a deep understanding of nocturnal adventures, drawn to dark basements resonating with heavy sound systems. Their show, Basement Soul, unites us all in a shared musical journey.
