Many Hands, a disc jockey duo hailing from New Zealand and the UK, now based in Berlin, has recently revealed their playlist for 'Basement Soul' episode 55. The show is hosted on Scientific Sound Asia, an electronic music station and DJ agency that caters to both expatriates and locals in Asia, as well as an international audience.

Many Hands is the intellectual creation of the profoundly engaged DJs, Jona J and Kava. Jona, whose real name is Jona Jefferies, was born in Barcelona and raised between Spain and the UK. His career as a disc jockey began during the rise of the free party and rave scene in Southwest England in the early 1990s. After relocating to Ibiza, he was enchanted by the island's Balearic sound and its indulgent ambience, which has drawn him back repeatedly as both a DJ and a raver.

After his stint in Ibiza, Jona moved to Bass City, Bristol, a place celebrated for its vibrant inner-city vibe and Sound System Culture. There, he spent several years honing his skills. Known for his free-spirited demeanour, Jona earned recognition in Berlin's burgeoning international music scene, gracing stages across the city's urban expanse. In 2020, he made his way back to the United Kingdom to further his musical pursuits.

Jona's track 'Nocturnal', a collaboration with his longtime friend Lewis Hopkin from Stardelta Mastering, released under the alias 'Sapience' for Tom Middleton's label 'Sound Of The Cosmos', has earned considerable acclaim. The track has been featured by renowned DJs such as Gilles Peterson, Mala, and Laurent Garnier.

Originally from New Zealand, Kava has made Berlin his home for more than ten years. His musical odyssey started in the dynamic music scene of Wellington, where he delved into a diverse mix of Soul, Bashment, Hip Hop, Disco, House, Techno, and Drum and Bass. In New Zealand, Kava thrived by distributing vinyl records widely and presenting several radio shows across different stations.

After moving to Berlin, Kava established himself as a regular on the former monthly radio show "Float Some and Jet Some," with Rodi Kirk from Scratch 22, broadcast on the now-defunct Berlin Community Radio. He also displayed his artistic skills at various venues across the German capital.

Jona and Kava met through a mutual friend near OYE Records in Berlin, where they quickly realized a shared musical connection. This fortuitous meeting led to the creation of Many Hands, an eclectic mix of dance, defragmentation, and soothing sessions dubbed Basement Soul, taking place in an intimate underground venue in the centre of Berlin.

Jona J & Kava's performances span a wide range of rhythmic and harmonic traditions. Their music, a fusion of Disco, Soul, Latin, and Afrobeat, integrates seamlessly with MPCs and Drum Machines, drawing influences from Jamaican artists in New York, West African musicians with synthesizers, and European funk enthusiasts. It's marked by sporadic quirkiness and boldness, yet it's consistently designed with dancers in mind.

Many Hands embody the spirit of vinyl record enthusiasts and music connoisseurs. As children of the 80s, they have an intrinsic grasp of nighttime escapades, attracted to the dark basements echoing with robust sound systems. Their program, Basement Soul, brings us together in a collective musical odyssey.

Be sure to tune in live on Friday, June 21st, 2024, from 8 PM to 10 PM Indochina Time (ICT), and don't miss the re-airing on Tuesday from 8 AM to 10 AM (ICT).
