Hailing from New Zealand and the UK, the DJ duo Many Hands is now based in Berlin. They have recently released the playlist for episode 56 of 'Basement Soul'. This show airs on Scientific Sound Asia, a platform focused on electronic music that caters to expats, locals in Asia, and a worldwide audience.
Many Hands was conceived through the intellectual partnership of dedicated DJs Jona J and Kava. Jona, or Jona Jefferies, is originally from Barcelona and spent his childhood between Spain and the UK. He began his DJ career amid the rise of the free party and rave scene in Southwest England during the early 1990s. After relocating to Ibiza, he was enchanted by the island's Balearic music and vibrant environment, drawing him back repeatedly as both a DJ and a reveler.
After his stint in Ibiza, Jona moved to Bass City, Bristol, famous for its vibrant city life and Sound System Culture. He spent several years there honing his skills. Known for his laid-back demeanor, Jona earned recognition in Berlin's bustling international music scene, performing on numerous stages across the city. In 2020, he came back to the United Kingdom to further pursue his musical career.
The song 'Nocturnal' by Jona, produced in partnership with his longtime friend Lewis Hopkin from Stardelta Mastering under the alias 'Sapience' for Tom Middleton's label 'Sound Of The Cosmos', has garnered considerable acclaim. It has been featured by renowned DJs such as Gilles Peterson, Mala, and Laurent Garnier.
Originally from New Zealand, Kava has resided in Berlin for more than ten years. His musical path started in Wellington's lively music scene, where he delved into a variety of genres such as Soul, Bashment, Hip Hop, Disco, House, Techno, and Drum and Bass. In New Zealand, Kava was successful in widely distributing vinyl records and hosting several radio shows across various stations.
After moving to Berlin, Kava soon established himself as a regular on the monthly radio show "Float Some and Jet Some," hosted by Rodi Kirk from Scratch 22, which was broadcast on the now-defunct Berlin Community Radio. He also displayed his artistic skills at various venues across the German capital.
Jona and Kava met through a mutual friend near OYE Records in Berlin, where they found a shared passion for music. This serendipitous meeting led to the creation of Many Hands, a unique blend of dance, deconstruction, and soothing events called Basement Soul, hosted in a cozy underground venue in central Berlin.
Jona J & Kava's shows encompass a diverse array of rhythmic and harmonic styles. Their music, blending Disco, Soul, Latin, and Afrobeat, effortlessly incorporates MPCs and Drum Machines, inspired by Jamaican musicians in New York, West African artists using synthesizers, and European funk fans. Their sound is characterized by occasional eccentricity and audacity, yet always crafted with dancers in focus.
Many Hands captures the essence of vinyl record lovers and music aficionados. Having come of age in the 80s, they instinctively grasp the allure of late-night escapades, gravitating towards dimly lit basements filled with booming sound systems. Their show, Basement Soul, brings us together on a collective musical voyage.
Many Hands brings an eclectic blend of sounds in Basement Soul 57, crafting a seamless journey through electronic, jazz, funk, and house-infused rhythms. The mix opens with the smooth "Far Beyond" by Sunburst Band, setting a soulful tone before transitioning into the jazz-funk essence of Mark De Clive Lowe’s "Swahililand". Throughout the set, deep grooves and leftfield synths create an atmospheric experience, with highlights like Mculo’s "Put Some Zambak On It" and Grand Slam’s "Goin' Out" keeping the energy flowing.
The second half of the session dives into deeper dancefloor sounds, featuring Borrowed CS' "All My People" (Extended Dub) and FelixCW's "Night Bus" (Donsuf Broke Mix), showcasing the blend of Deep House, Nu Disco, and Funky Soul. Afro-influences from Don Kamares’ "Batié" bring a global touch, while the closing selection with The Foreign Exchange’s "I Couldn't Love You More" (Dub) leaves a lasting impression.
With its masterful curation of jazz, funk, electronic, and soulful rhythms, Basement Soul 57 is a must-listen for fans of genre-defying music with deep grooves and smooth transitions. Be sure to tune in live on Friday, January 31st, 2025, from 8 PM to 10 PM Indochina Time (ICT), and don't miss the re-airing on Tuesday from 8 AM to 10 AM (ICT).
